BIOMEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT AT V.S. HOSPITAL

BIOMEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT AT V.S. HOSPITAL
On 16th September we visited VS Hospital to see how they manage their biomedical waste.  After the initial round of formalities and attaining permissions, we were taken around various wards of the hospital, namely the General Ward, Labour Room, Operation Theatre, Skin OPD, Thoracic ICU and the Pathology Laboratory. We were shown and explained how the waste was managed and segregated. They have bins of 4 colours in every ward: red, blue, yellow and green.

RED: Plastics. eg. blood bags, urine bags, ryles tubes, I.V. bags, catheters, etc

BLUE: Sharp objects. eg. syringes, destroyed needles, broken bottles, blades, scalpels, etc.  Blue bins have 1% hypochloride solution to sterilise the waste.

YELLOW: Infected material. eg. human anatomical waste, animal waste, microbiology and biotechnology waste, soiled waste, etc. This also includes bedding which is discarded every 3-4 days.
